African Prints in High Fashion

January 20, 2011 — 4 Comments

I will post more about when traditional African prints make their way into Western High Fashion. Here is Kendall Jenner, sister of Kim, Khloe, and Kourtney Kardashian modelling for MARCC ‘s Spring/Summer 2011 line.

To be honest, I’m not sure I like this at all. And, I’m also not sure how I really feel about it…I’m not going to cry appropriation or similar, my main concern is if any African is benefitting from this at all. I know these prints are ‘not really African’ because of their history but it remains that Africa is the biggest market for the prints. The way I see it, these prints used in high fashion that is, could have been bought from Dutch companies and created/sewn by Western designers. In such a case, that would mean no locally made print fabrics are been used and African designers who have been using these fabrics for years get pushed to the sideline.

If things are going to turn out in that way (i.e. with African designers and locally made fabrics ignored), then it is better that African prints do not make it into Western high fashion.
